The "Everywhere Work Report" paints a rather bleak picture of the hybrid working world in 2023. Because there is a huge gap between what employees expect from a self-determined choice of their place of work and what employers are willing to allow.
The result: burnout and dissatisfaction in German offices are reflected in an attitude of denial. For the study, 8.400 office workers, IT specialists and executives were surveyed worldwide - 1.300 of them from Germany. Since Ivanti's last "Everywhere Workplace Study 2022" the number of employees who want to choose their place of work independently has remained consistently high. However, the current survey shows that German employers are increasingly restricting the degree of freedom in this regard.
Hybrid or decentralized
71% of workers want a hybrid or distributed work environment that they can choose for themselves.
However, only 46% of employees currently have the opportunity to do so.
For 23% of German executives, hybrid working is a "no go" and 42% require employees to be in the office at least 3 to 4 days a week.
Interesting in this context: The decreed return to the office has a negative impact on the business results of companies. This effect is particularly pronounced in Germany. A quarter of managers in this country (24%) report that their sales have fallen after their employees were called back to their permanent office workplace. 22% state a decline in sales figures and 17% mention a negative development of their company's share price in this context.
Call of duty
The reasons for these effects are certainly manifold. However, the attitude of the employees to their new work reality also plays a role here. The results of the Ivanti study illustrate the frustration in German offices: every fifth employee (5%) is currently only doing "work to rule". Almost half of them (19%) give a lack of motivation as the reason for this. The situation in IT departments is even more precarious. There it is 43% of the employees who quietly give up.

In fact, companies that live and promote an 'everywhere work' mentality with a corresponding tech stack will realize sustainable competitive advantages. The way and where employees want to get their work done has fundamentally changed, and it is imperative for leaders to break down cultural and technical barriers to make this possible.”

The Ivanti study clearly shows how difficult this is for German managers in particular: every third respondent at the C-level (34%) says that working from home has a negative impact on their employees' work ethic. This value is a good twice as high as the global average.
In contrast, 72% of office workers emphasize that they do not perceive any negative effects from hybrid working. Just 2% of office workers believe they were passed over for a promotion because of hybrid working - down significantly from 9% in the 2022 Ivanti survey.
