The greatest challenges of today's network security

Organizations are struggling with network breaches, ransomware attacks, remote working, and more. New Barracuda study highlights the greatest challenges facing network security today.

81 percent of companies were victims of a security breach in the last year, with ransomware making up a large proportion of the attacks. 74 percent of companies were victims of at least one ransomware attack in the last year (69 percent in DACH). This is shown by the new study "The State of Network Security in 2021" by the cloud security specialist Barracuda. As part of the study, 750 IT decision-makers around the world who are responsible for the networks, public cloud and security in their company were surveyed. The core topics of the survey were the introduction of the cloud, working from home as well as problems and challenges related to cybersecurity risks.

Overall, the study shows that network breaches, ransomware attacks, and remote work challenges underscore the need for cloud-native Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) implementations.

Security risks in the home office

  • Companies with employees who mostly work from home had a significantly higher rate of security breaches in the network (85 percent) than companies with employees who mostly work in the office (65 percent).
  • On average, only 14 percent of the employees of the companies surveyed work permanently in the office (also 14 percent in DACH).
  • A full 97 percent of those surveyed with company-owned devices share their home Internet connection with other members of their household, so there is still a risk of burglary.

Further key results at a glance

  • 73 percent of companies with all applications in the public cloud have already implemented SD-WAN, twice as many as companies with only a few applications in the public cloud (37 percent).
  • 68 percent of companies where all applications are in the public cloud have implemented Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA). In contrast, only 38 percent of companies with only a few applications in the public cloud did so.
  • On average, companies have implemented 31 Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications.
  • On average, respondents said that 64 percent of their traffic is directed to public cloud providers.
  • Despite the fast connectivity, employees who work from home are still struggling with operational issues as well as issues with service quality.
  • Companies are investing in Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) technologies
  • Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) technologies are seen as solutions for preventing security breaches and managing problems when working from home.

"Organizations experience high levels of network breaches and face constant connectivity and security challenges as they adapt to hybrid work environments," said Klaus Gheri, general manager of network security at Barracuda Networks. “But they are realizing that the move to SaaS applications and the public cloud is improving both user experience and security, so they are starting to take advantage of new SASE technologies.” Read more about the report online at Barracuda.
