In its new Brand Phishing Report for the fourth quarter of 2022, Check Point presents the new phishing threats. The report highlights the brands most frequently impersonated by hackers in their attempts to steal personal information or payment details in the months of October, November and December of the past year.

In general, the technology sector was the industry most impersonated by brand phishing in the last quarter of 2022, followed by logistics and social media. DHL ranked second with 16 percent of all branded phishing attempts, ahead of Microsoft in third place with XNUMX percent.

LinkedIn also returned to the list this quarter, ranking fifth at 5,7 percent. DHL's popularity may be due to the busy online shopping season surrounding Black Friday and Cyber ​​Monday, with hackers using the brand to generate fake delivery notifications.

Microsoft Teams phishing email

This phishing email attempted to steal a user's Microsoft account information. The email was sent from the address "teamsalert_Y3NkIGpoY2pjc3dzandpM3l1ODMzM3Nuc2tlY25taXc@gmx[.]com[.]my" with a fake sender name Teams and subject "You have been added to a new team". The attacker tries to trick the victim into clicking the malicious link, claiming that they have been added to a new team in the app. Confirming cooperation leads to malicious website "https://u31315517[.]ct[.]sendgrid[.]net/ls/click" which is no longer active.
