Cybercriminals have barely gone online and are already targeting the new AI startup DeepSeek. So far, DeepSeek has not released any specific details about current attacks. However, the misuse of open source software like DeepSeek is certain.
For security experts at Kaspersky, attacks on DeepSeek are not too surprising. On the one hand, they know the crux of open source and, on the other hand, that cybercriminals use current trends and hype to steal login credentials. "The open source nature of DeepSeek is a double-edged sword. While open source frameworks promote transparency, collaboration and innovation, they also come with significant security and ethical risks. When an open source tool is used, it often remains unclear how the data is handled, especially if the tool was provided by a third party. The misuse of open source software has become an established trend in the threat landscape over the past year; cybercriminals are conducting increasingly complex campaigns to inject malware into systems."

Thousands of malicious packages in public repositories
"Last year alone, Kaspersky's open source scanner discovered more than 12.000 malicious packages in public repositories. Without central control, threat actors have the ability to create compromised software versions or implement backdoors disguised as harmless tools to use DeepSeek's API. This currently poses a serious risk to users and organizations," said Leonid Bezvershenko, security researcher in the Global Research & Analysis Team (GReAT).
The new DeepSeek AI Assistant has attracted a lot of attention - both positive and negative. Several cases of fraud have already been identified. With the high number of new users and a suspected cyberattack on DeepSeek, the registration process of the DeepSeek app and website is experiencing disruptions, preventing many registrations from being completed. "This situation provides an opportunity for cybercriminals to create fake DeepSeek websites to steal users' login credentials. This stolen data could then be used not only to access DeepSeek accounts, but also accounts on other services if the same password is used multiple times," said Olga Svistunova, Senior Web Content Analyst at Kaspersky.
