Greater awareness of IT security due to the Ukraine conflict

Share post

As a G DATA study shows, the conflict in Ukraine has led to a higher awareness of IT security: 37 percent of Germans pay more attention to IT security in the company, even as employees. More than 5.000 employees in Germany were surveyed for the mood picture.

Crises like the Ukraine war influence the mood in Germany. As a result, people feel less safe. This is also reflected in the current study "Cyber Security in Numbers", which G DATA CyberDefense conducted together with Statista. More than a third of those surveyed are more attentive to the topic of IT security than before the conflict began.

Ukraine conflict fuels IT attention

The topic of IT security has become even more important in recent months. A central reason for this: the Ukraine conflict. The current survey "Cybersecurity in Figures" by G DATA CyberDefense in cooperation with Statista shows: More than 37 percent of the employees surveyed believe that the perception of IT security is higher than before the conflict began. Perception has fallen in just five percent.

"The Ukraine war puts cybersecurity in a new light, because it's no longer about individual companies, but about the cohesion of our society and our prosperity," says Andreas Lüning, co-founder and CEO of G DATA CyberDefense. "However, to date we have not seen any successful cyberattacks that indicate a large-scale military or intelligence attack against critical infrastructure."

IT security: Prepare for emergencies

Especially at the beginning of the war, companies dealt intensively with the question of how to improve their IT security. The measures and recommendations for improving IT security that have been urgently recommended for years continue to apply. This includes endpoint protection, backup strategy and emergency plan as well as patch management. However, an installed protection solution is only as good as it is allowed to be.

Anyone who specifically disables proactive components, for example, significantly weakens their defense because attacks are not recognized in good time. The well-known rules of conduct for employees when dealing with emails and file attachments also apply. Only in this way can the workforce become a critical part of the security strategy. Anyone who trains employees accordingly has a decisive advantage.

"Cybersecurity in Numbers" is characterized by a high density of information and particular methodological depth: As data specialists, the researchers and market researchers from Statista have combined figures, data and facts from more than 300 statistics into a unique complete work. More than 5.000 employees in Germany were surveyed as part of a representative online study on cyber security in a professional and private context.
