Every 2nd connection from the home office to the company network is poorly secured

In Germany, people rarely use secure passwords, anti-virus programs or two-factor authentication. This exposes your data to unnecessary risk - both at work and at home. This is confirmed by the current “cybersecurity” survey by G DATA CyberDefense in cooperation with Statista and brand eins.

There is a lot of catching up to do with IT protection measures in Germany - both in the private and professional environment. Particularly noticeable: only 45,2 percent of employees who work completely from home use VPN, i.e. a secure network connection to the company. In other words: every second connection from the home office to the company network is not adequately protected. Only 41,5 percent of those surveyed who only work from home use two-factor authentication.

Only over 40 percent use two-factor authentication

“Nobody would get into a car if the brakes weren't working or the seat belts were jammed. When it comes to protection against cyber threats, however, many people forego basic security and thus act with gross negligence, ”says Tim Berghoff, Security Evangelist at G DATA CyberDefense. “Even with simple measures, we make cybercriminals' work very difficult. This includes secure passwords and two-factor authentication. "

Only 55,8 percent make regular security updates

Even in their private lives, most respondents do not use all of the available protective measures. 55,8 percent carry out regular security updates and 51,2 percent protect their private devices with a firewall. Other IT security measures are used significantly less. Only 38,9 percent use secure, unique passwords. The same password for multiple services such as online shops or social networks makes it easy for cybercriminals to steal identities. Only 28,9 percent of those surveyed rely on a paid antivirus program, 44,2 percent trust in protection from a free protection program. Two-factor authentication or regular data backup are also not part of the security standard in Germany. The magazine “Cybersecurity in Numbers” is available for download online.
