DDoS traffic: 436 billion gigabits in one day

DDoS attacks continue to be a popular means of cyberattacks. Netscout recorded 436 petabit DDoS traffic in one day, that's 436 billion gigabits! From 2019 to 2022, DDoS attacks increased by almost 500 percent.

NETSCOUT presents the results of the 5th Anniversary Edition of the DDoS Threat Intelligence Report, which point to a wave of novel multi-vector attacks. Cyber criminals aim to directly block the digital communication of the target organizations through attacks at the application level and through botnets. Overall, the number of DDoS attacks has increased tenfold since the first report in 2005.

DDoS: An increase of 500 percent in a few years

Globally, attacks targeting the HTTP/HTTPS application layer have increased by 2019 percent since 487, resulting in more than 2022 billion compromised websites. The strongest increase was seen in the second half of XNUMX, largely due to the activities of pro-Russian hacking groups like Killnet, which explicitly target websites. These DDoS attacks increasingly preceded Russia's invasion of Ukraine, blocking key financial, government, and media sites.

More results from the DDoS Threat Intelligence Report

  • The record value for DDoS traffic in one day was 436 petabit with more than 75 trillion data packets. Much of this data traffic has already been intercepted by service providers, while companies also eliminated an average of 345 terabytes of unwanted traffic every day.
  • The number of direct path attacks has increased by 18 percent over the past three years, while traditional reflection/amplification attacks have decreased by approximately the same percentage. This underscores the need for a hybrid defense approach to counter the changing attack methods.
  • There has been a massive increase in attacks in the US related to the pro-Russian Killnet group by 16.815 percent. Attacks spiked on the day US President Biden and French President Macron publicly reiterated support for Ukraine at the G7 summit. [SK1] [OF2]
  • NETSCOUT ASERT analysts were able to over 2022 million bots in 1,35 from malware families such as Mirai, Meris and Dvinis. This resulted in more than 350.000 security-related alerts about botnet attacks on businesses, while service providers received around 60.000 alerts about bots in the same period.
  • Carpet bombing attacks, which simultaneously target entire IP address ranges, increased by 2022 percent from the first to the second half of 110, with most attacks targeting ISP networks.
  • Manufacturers of optical devices and lenses in the EMEA region have experienced a massive increase in the number of DDoS attacks by 14.137 percent. One large retailer was particularly hard hit, registering more than 6.000 attacks within four months.
  • The number of DDoS attacks in wireless telecommunications has increased by 2020 percent since 79, primarily due to the increasing deployment of 5G wireless-to-the-home. These attacks currently account for around 20 percent of all DDoS attacks.

DDoS Threat Intelligence Report

NETSCOUT's DDoS Threat Intelligence Report documents the latest trends and activities in threat scenarios from DDoS attacks. The report is based on data from NETSCOUT ATLAS and the expertise of the NETSCOUT Security Research Team ASERT. ATLAS was built over the past two decades in partnership with more than 500 Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and today has a sensor network that collects information on more than 93 Tbit/s of global transit traffic in an average of 400 countries every day. On this basis, ATLAS generates daily DDoS attack statistics for over 50 percent of global Internet traffic.

The global information and findings on DDoS attacks documented in the DDoS Threat Intelligence Report are made accessible via the NETSCOUT Threat Horizon Portal and are incorporated into the ATLAS Intelligence Feed (AIF). Through this collection of verified and up-to-date information, NETSCOUT is able to continuously expand its portfolio of security solutions to enable companies and service providers worldwide to automatically detect and block digital threats.
