As a result of the faulty CrowdStrike update this summer, almost every second affected company in Germany experienced operational downtime of around ten hours. This underlines the importance of an effective backup strategy to protect sensitive data.
The CrowdStrike incident has certainly shown that companies of all sizes and in all industries are vulnerable to serious IT disruptions. But it only underlines once again the urgent need for a robust and multi-layered backup strategy as a central component of the cyber resilience strategy. It is no longer a question of "if" but of "when" an organization will be affected by a serious IT disruption. This makes it all the more important to protect data as the company's most valuable asset.
Backup strategy and recovery plan are essential
Given this reality, backup processes must be viewed as a critical business function and prioritized accordingly. Regular, secure and diversified backups, coupled with a well-thought-out and tested recovery plan, are the backbone of an effective data protection strategy. Investing in modern backup solutions that include both local and cloud-based options is not just a technical necessity, but a strategic decision to ensure business continuity.
In addition, it is important to raise awareness of the importance of data security and backups at all levels of the company. Employees must be trained and involved in the processes in order to establish a culture of data security. Only through a holistic approach that takes technology, processes and people into account can companies effectively protect themselves against the increasing threats of the digital world. The CrowdStrike incident should therefore be seen as a wake-up call: it is high time to rethink backup strategies, modernize them and anchor them as an integral part of the company strategy. For example, data from SaaS applications should also be backed up.

However, they must not forget that cybersecurity and resilience are not one-off projects, but should be understood as continuous processes. This means that strategies must be regularly reviewed and adapted in order to be prepared for the challenges of an increasingly complex digital world.
