Data protection: data protection without configuration

Data protection innovations reduce security risks with faster deployment cycles and simplified operations. Zscaler improves enterprise data protection with industry-leading no-configuration data protection.

Zscaler, Inc. announces data protection innovations that build on a long history of securing data in motion and at rest in cloud applications and BYOD resources. The new developments bring the greatest accuracy and scalability to data protection projects and reduce time-to-market to hours with zero-configuration functionality for Data Loss Prevention (DLP). Security risks are reduced by unifying data protection across all channels and simplifying operations with the help of workflow automation.

Data Loss Report: nearly 6 billion violations

In today's mobile and cloud-centric world, data is spread across hundreds of applications and workloads, increasing the risk of data loss for organizations. The challenges of protecting such distributed data are validated by the findings of the ThreatLabz team's new 2022 Data Loss Report. The study shows that 36 percent of cloud application data is accessible over the open Internet. Analysis of nearly 6 billion data loss policy violations found that organizations face an average of 10.000 potential data leaks every day, which can result in more than $4,35 million in losses¹

Traditional DLP solutions fail to protect distributed data and require a huge investment of resources. Not only are they costly to configure, maintain and manage, they can result in months of implementation time while putting organizations at risk of losses. At the same time, the lack of automated workflows prevents security teams from remediating critical risks and leads to long periods of mitigation and unresolved incidents.

Lack of automated workflows

To make matters worse, reliance on point products for different channels leads to increased risk, reduced visibility and inconsistent policies. On average, organizations that have not implemented a unified Zero Trust strategy suffer an additional $1 million in losses, showing that data protection should not be an isolated endeavor.

"Building on eight years of data protection innovations, Zscaler has developed advanced automatic classification capabilities to speed deployment and reduce effort and costs for the security team," said Moinul Khan, vice president & general manager, data protection at Zscaler. “Unlike other data protection solutions, this new functionality ensures that Zscaler Data Protection simplifies the IT administrator's job. In addition, the technology recently acquired from the acquisition of ShiftRight makes it possible to manage hundreds of potential risks and incidents in a simple but very advanced way, significantly reducing incident resolution time.”

Zscaler Zero Trust Exchange

The Security Service Edge (SSE) security category underscores the market's need for unified data protection as part of a larger security platform. These advancements to the Zscaler Zero Trust Exchange, aligned with SSE principles, reinforce Zscaler's position as a leader in data protection. Security teams get the following new capabilities:

  • Accelerated deployment cycles with Zero Configuration DLP: The new Zero Configuration DLP capabilities leverage the scalability of the world's largest security cloud, which processes 170 million files per day. Automatic classification of enterprise data accelerates the delivery of data protection projects.
  • Mitigate security risks by unifying data protection across all channels: The additional features for endpoint and email protection complement the existing support for web, SaaS, IaaS, PaaS and private applications. This eliminates the need for point products and reduces security risks and management complexity by unifying policies across the board.
  • Simplified operations through automated workflows: Advanced closed-loop incident management delivers actionable insights and automates workflows to respond to potential security risks in a timely and effective manner.
  • "Securing data is always a challenge due to complex workflows and inconsistent protection strategies for different users and devices," said Bashar Abouseido, CISO of Charles Schwab. “Zscaler has changed all that as we now have a unified platform with full visibility and policy control while being able to dramatically streamline our processes.”

"Zscaler is one of the most seamless and easy implementations I've seen in a long time," said Thomas Likas, Head of Cyber & Digital Trust Enterprise Architecture at Takeda. "The comprehensive and unified approach to protecting data across all channels helps us transform and evolve our data protection program to ensure sensitive data remains protected from accidental loss or malicious exfiltration."
