The OT threat landscape is growing: supply chain vulnerabilities, outdated infrastructure, difficulties in installing patches, and gaps in incident response require urgent action to protect industrial operations.
A cyber-physical systems (CPS) security company has published its annual operational technology (OT) cybersecurity report. It details various risks, such as supply chain vulnerabilities, legacy infrastructure, patching difficulties, and gaps in incident response. The report highlights growing concerns about digital vulnerabilities that can arise during the deployment of industrial control systems (ICS), including smart sensors, edge computing devices, asset tracking solutions, and remote monitoring tools.

Protect OT
"How can companies effectively protect these interconnected systems against cyber threats? This is the urgent challenge that Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) worldwide must address," states the 2024 Annual Report from TXOne Networks on OT/ICS Cybersecurity: "Traditionally, cybersecurity strategies have focused on protecting IT systems and their digital assets. However, with the advancing digitalization of industry, critical infrastructures are increasingly being integrated into unified digital ecosystems, which increases the attack surface. Due to the significant differences between OT and IT systems, IT-centric security measures are often inadequate in OT environments. As OT systems are now closely integrated, these inadequacies of traditional IT
The study covers several industry sectors, including the automotive industry, the food industry, the oil and gas industry, the pharmaceutical industry, and the semiconductor industry, all of which are critical to the global economy and particularly exposed to OT cybersecurity challenges. The report shows that 94 percent of surveyed companies reported being threatened by OT cyber incidents in the past year, while 98 percent experienced IT incidents that also affected their OT environments. While ransomware incidents declined from 47 percent of respondents in 2023 to 28 percent in 2024, state-sponsored attacks on critical infrastructure (CIT) emerged as a growing problem. Advanced persistent threats (APTs), vulnerabilities in supply chain software, and advanced malware, such as Fuxnet and FrostyGoop, are among the diverse threats documented in the report.
