Access control vulnerabilities and data disclosure risks are the most common security flaws in corporate-developed web applications. This is shown by a current analysis in the period 2021 to 2023. This makes it too easy for attackers to break into companies.
For its report, security specialist Kaspersky examined vulnerabilities in self-developed web applications from companies in the IT, government, insurance, telecommunications, cryptocurrencies, e-commerce and healthcare sectors.

Self-developed web applications defective
The majority (70 percent) of the vulnerabilities found relate to data protection related to sensitive information such as passwords, credit card details, health records, personal data and confidential business information or access control. Using the latter, cybercriminals can circumvent website guidelines and thereby, for example, change or delete data.
In the majority of the applications examined, the experts found several dozen vulnerabilities affecting access control and data protection; many that were assigned to the highest risk level were related to SQL injections. Some of the vulnerabilities analyzed were even high risk. 88 percent of all SQL injection vulnerabilities analyzed were high-risk; Furthermore, 78 percent were classified as high risk in the area of weak passwords.

Vulnerabilities, bad passwords and more
🔎 40 to 70 percent of the web applications examined contain classic errors, such as defective access control (Image: Kaspersky).
Additionally, 22 percent of all web applications examined by Kaspersky had weak passwords. One possible reason is that the apps included in the sample may have been trials rather than actual live systems.
