Social engineering also threatens many employees in companies. The new Bitdefender chatbot service Scamio uses a powerful AI service to detect and verify online fraud attempts across email, text messages, messaging apps and social media.

Bitdefender has introduced Scamio, a free service to detect attempted scams. The service is intended to help users verify fraudulent online offers via email, embedded links, text and instant messaging by working with a chatbot based on artificial intelligence.

Detect social engineering with Scamio

The extent of online fraud continues to increase every year. According to a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) report, consumer losses to fraud totaled $2022 billion in 8,8, up 30 percent from the previous year. Fraud spread via text messages alone caused $330 million in losses. The amount of damage has therefore more than doubled. Cybercriminals are using recently introduced Large Language Models (LLM) and AI tools to create malicious content that is extremely difficult to detect. This is likely to make the fight against online fraud even more difficult.

Bitdefender Scamio is a scam detection chatbot that provides clues to potential scams by analyzing emails, text messages, images, individual links, and even QR codes. Users simply enter questionable content into Scamio and use the dialog to describe how they received it. Scamio makes a judgment in a matter of seconds and recommends further action (e.g. “delete” and/or “block contact”) as well as preventive measures to protect against future fraud attempts of this type.

AI detects fraud better

In addition to the latest AI technology, Bitdefender protection, prevention and threat detection technologies also support the new Scamio service and maximize malware scan detection rates. Thanks to innovative analysis, the chatbot makes decisions about the risk of fraud based on understanding the context. This is particularly effective for complex types of fraud, such as social engineering, that can bypass traditional forms of detection.
